How to Start Again

I regularly meet and speak with candidates who are considering moving to a new area, or have done so recently. Having moved to Hamilton from the UK just over a year ago, I wanted to share a few tips on how to get up and running quickly!

1. Get out there!

Building a base of great friends from scratch can take longer than you might think and is vital in helping you feel settled in a new area. Get out there and meet as many new people as you can and say yes to any and all invitations!

2. Start a new hobby

Moving somewhere new is a fantastic opportunity to learn something and built some healthy new habits. Join a gym and sign up for a few classes, explore the local scenery, take an art class, or even join a book club. Not only will you be learning, these are great places to meet new people!

3. Find a job

While this is easier said than done, there are a few options to get you started. I would recommend getting in touch with some local temp recruitment agencies and seeing if there are any opportunities available. Temping is a great way to find out how things work in your new country/area and you may even hear of permanent opportunities while you’re in the role.

When I moved to Hamilton, I researched all the recruitment companies in the area and called the ones I would want to work at. After meeting a few, I found the perfect match with Everest. It can be scary calling people out of the blue but speaking to people directly will get you much further than an impersonal email.

4. Be patient

I made the mistake of trying to do too much too quickly and made myself unwell! Accept the fact that building a new life is going to take time, and roll with the punches!

Moving somewhere new gives you the unique opportunity to create the life you want, not just the life you’ve grown up in – embrace it!
